Plastic in food

23-12-2022

British researchers found that when you eat the traditional roast Christmas dinner, 230,000 pieces of microplastics come into your body.

Researchers cooked two roast chicken dinners and they compared the results. They cooked one dinner from ingredients wrapped in plastic, while the other dinner came in no plastic. The first dinner contained seven times more microplastics. Researchers found that if we ate this dinner every day, we would eat 10 grams of plastic. This amount is enough to make two plastic bags.

Many people believe that if they eat no fish, then they won’t eat microplastics. This is no longer true because more microplastics are in the ground than in the oceans.

Difficult words: microplastic (very small pieces of plastic), ingredient (any of the foods which make a dish).

Many weather apps

27-12-2022

People have many choices for weather apps. Some apps tell you the general, short-term, and long-term weather. Interestingly, the apps show different weather because of weather forecasts.

Weather forecasts are careful guesses to find out the weather. Weather scientists look at the areas of space above the earth up to the sky. They get weather data, and then they use math to find the differences in the areas. They use this data to guess the weather, and they also use estimations and historical forecasts to fill in any data that they don’t know. Sometimes they make mistakes.

Apps show different weather because they get different weather forecasts, and they show the data differently. For daily weather, you can use a short-term and long-term app to guess your weather.

Difficult words: short–term (an amount of time), forecast (to carefully guess something), estimate (to carefully guess something with math).
